What is your full name and where are you from?

My name is Ella Fotu, I was born in England. My mum is English and my dad is Tongan, I moved to New Zealand when I was 5

What teams are you currently playing for?

Currently in the NZ tallferns squad

Why did you choose the game of basketball?

I chose basketball because I saw the opportunities it gave my brother and allowed me to make lots of friends and travel all around the world.

What school did you attend? and what were your achievements and highlights?

I went to Rangitoto college in NZ and then went to Boise state and Hawaii pacific universities in the states. At Hawaii pacific we won conference and won conference tournament.

You are a role model for young women, what advice do you have for them getting into basketball?

Enjoy the game of basketball! It offers so much at all levels. If you want to get better you just have to put in the time, effort and work.

What has been the highlight of your career?

I remember the day I was selected to play for the New Zealand Tall ferns team, was a cool as moment.

Who has been your biggest influence in basketball and why?

Probably my older brother who showed me the opportunities basketball can offer.

Where do you see women’s basketball in the next five years?

Women’s basketball is Definitely growing fast and I hope to see the game become bigger with more support and funding. I think New Zealand has so much talent and hopefully we can make the most of it all.

Who is the ultimate women’s basketball player in New Zealand?

I’ve always been a huge fan girl of Micaela Cocks

What have you been doing this off-season to stay connected with the game?

I’ve been working out a lot with my brothers trying to stay fit during lockdown, which was tough but fun. We did lots of circuits, boxing and hill sprints, it gets competitive. Now I’m just trying to get in a gym as much as possible to work on my game.
