New Zealand Hoops – Q&A With Mary Goulding

What is your full name and where are you from?

 Mary Goulding from North Canterbury (Rangiora, NZ)

Why did you choose the wonderful game of basketball? 

Because of the enjoyment I get from playing, the friendships I make, the basketball community and the sense of family. I love the competitive environment and also love knowing there is always something to improve on.

What schools did you attend? and what were your achievements and highlights?

Primary – St Josephs and Ashley

High school – Rangiora – being on the SnrA team and named in the Secondary schools national tournament team

College – Gillette and Fordham – Winning championship at both Gillette and Fordham. Named All American at Gillette. MVP of A10 championship tournament (At Fordham) 

You are a role model for young women, what advice do you have for them getting into basketball?

Work hard and push yourself but don’t forget to have fun!

Don’t compare yourself to others, focus instead on what you can control; your attitude and how hard you work.

What has been the ultimate highlight so far in your career? 

 Winning the A10 championship tournament

Who has been your biggest influence in basketball and why?

My coaches. Each of the coaches I had growing up and then at college have been so supportive and have always believed in me. 

Where do you see women’s basketball in the next five years? 

 I hope to see more women’s basketball on TV and for women’s basketball to be more appreciated.

In terms of your playing career, what would be the pinnacle for you? 

To play for NZ in the commonwealth games and/or olympics

You are playing in the Showcase on August 1st, are you excited to be apart of this? 

I am very excited to be a part of this. It’s a great opportunity. I hope that through this exposure people will gain an appreciation for women’s basketball.
