New Zealand Hoops – Q&A With Brooke Blair

What is your full name and where are you from?

Brooke Blair from Auckland, New Zealand

Why did you choose the game of basketball?

My Mum and older sisters played so I just ended up playing too and fell in love with the game at a young age. 

What schools did you attend? and what were your achievements and highlights?

Rangitoto College 2009-2012 | Sportswomen of the year 2012Northeastern Junior College 2013-2015 | Associates of Arts| Region IX All-Tournament Team Idaho State University 2015-2018 | Bachelor of Science, Minor in Coaching | Masters in Physical Education | All-Tournament Team (2016), Second Team-All Big Sky Conference (2018) One of my highlights in 2018 was coming back from an ACL injury and being able to play again. At one stage during the season I was number 1 in the country for 3-point field goal percentage in NCAA  which was pretty cool. 

You are a role model for young women, what advice do you have for them getting into basketball? 

Work Hard, Play Hard and make sure to always have fun.

What has been the ultimate highlight so far in your career?

Representing New Zealand is always cool but proberly would have to be going to College and getting my Masters degree while playing ball. I wasnt a huge fan of school so for me this meant a lot. 

Who has been your biggest influence in basketball and why?

Kobe Bryant. Hes just the man, love his Mamba Mentality. 

Where do you see women’s basketball in the next five years? 

I feel like women’s Basketball will continue to grow and get better. I see NZ putting on a more competitive professional league which they are already trying to work towards. It would be great to see players getting paid, overseas imports, more sponsorship, community involvement. 

Who is the ultimate women’s basketball player in New Zealand?

Noni Wharemate, she was my idol growing up. 

Who is the ultimate mens basketball player?

Tai Webster, he’s a bucket.

In terms of your playing career, what would be the pinnacle for you?

Playing for NZ at the Commonwealth games/ Olympics or playing in Europe. 

What is the best pair of basketball shoes you have owned?

Nike Kobe 7s.

You played in the Showcase on August 1st, what was it like to be apart of that experience? 

It was pretty awesome, was just a great opportuinty to get alot of the younger girls together and expose womens basketball.Be confident.

If you have one piece of advice for your younger self, what would it be?

Be confident.
