What is your full name and where are you from?
Amy Olivia West, I’m originally from England but moved to Palmerston North when I was 5.
Why did you choose the game of basketball?
I didn’t start playing basketball till I was 15, I had always played many other sports but basketball was never on my radar. It wasn’t until I was recruited into basketball by my first ever coach, Miles. I instantly fell in love with the atmosphere and the game and decided that I would drop all other sports just to focus on basketball. I learned about the opportunities of going overseas and that definitely sold it more to me.
What schools did you attend and what were your achievements and highlights?
I attended Palmerston North Girls High School. A major achievement and highlight was when I was named the high-performance sports prefect.
You are a role model for young women, what advice do you have for them getting into basketball?
I would just say to always love what you’re working hard for. There’s always going to be times where things don’t go your way, but if you keep working hard towards your goals then only good things will come.
What has been the ultimate highlight so far in your career?
The ultimate highlight for me was definitely debuting for the tall ferns last year.
Who has been your biggest influence in basketball and why?
One of my biggest influences would be my first coach who recruited me into basketball, Miles Pearce. He saw the potential I had and is now one of my biggest supporters. I have so much to thank him for!
Where do you see women’s basketball in the next five years?
Over the past year, women’s basketball has grown a lot, and there is a lot of excitement and hype around the women’s game. There are so many talented players in New Zealand that can help continue to grow the amount of recognition deserved.
Who is the ultimate women’s basketball player in New Zealand?
I would have to say the Purcells. They’re amazing players on the court and even better people off the court.
In terms of your playing career, what would be the pinnacle for you?
To play professionally and the Olympics of course.
What’s the best pair of basketball shoes you have owned?
You are played in the Showcase on August 1st, what was it like to be apart of that experience?
It was awesome to be a part of the showcase and getting to have all the new players debuting. The best part was just going out there playing with your mates, nothing is more fun than that.
If you have one piece of advice for your younger self, what would it be?
Believe in yourself.
