New Zealand Hoops – Q&A With Chevannah Paalvast

What is your full name and where are you from?

Chevannah Paalvast

Auckland, NZ

Why did you choose the game of basketball?

Both my parents played and my best friend asked me to join her team

What schools did you attend and what were your achievements and highlights?

High School – Massey High School

College – Monmouth University

I think my greatest basketball achievement would be scoring over 1000 points in college, academically it would be graduating Magna Cum Laude and obtaining my MBA.

You are a role model for young women, what advice do you have for them getting into basketball?

Make sure you have fun, even when it starts getting super serious, always remember that you started playing because you enjoyed it. A lot of people lose love for the game because they forget to have fun with it.

What has been the ultimate highlight so far in your career?

Ultimate highlight would be either getting bronze at 2018 Commonwealth games, or beating Australia and getting gold at FIBA 3X3 Asia Cup.

Who has been your biggest influence in basketball and why?

My mum. She was often my coach and spent a lot of hours working with me on my game. She has sacrificed a lot to help get me to where I am now.

Where do you see women’s basketball in the next five years?

Women’s basketball is slowly getting the recognition it deserves. There is more following of women’s leagues around the world, and slight pay increases. I love seeing women’s basketball getting the respect it deserves.

Who is the ultimate women’s basketball player in New Zealand?

Very tough question, but I would have to go with Micaela Cocks. Easily one of the hardest working teammates I have ever had and has always pushed everyone around her to be better.

Who is the ultimate men’s basketball player in New Zealand?

Dillion Boucher. I value defense, and boy, could he play defense. Hustled hard and never gave up on a play. Just an all around hard worker.

In terms of your playing career, what would be the pinnacle for you?

I think the pinnacle would be playing for New Zealand in an Olympics. Most athletes believe that the Olympics is the pinnacle event in the world, and it would be amazing to have an opportunity to compete against some of the best in the world.

Whats the best pair of basketball shoes you have owned?

KD 8. Great shoe!

You are currently playing in the QSL (Queensland State League), how is the season going?

Our season started 3 weeks ago and so far it is going great. We are undefeated at the moment.

Will you pursue basketball after your playing career?

I think that I would always like to be a part of basketball, maybe as a basketball coach.
